Coercion Tactics in Teen Dating Abuse

Coercion is another word for convincing someone to do something they don’t want to do.

Coercion is often used in relationships that are unhealthy as a way for abusers to get what they want. This can include sexual acts or convincing you not to break up with them. Coercion makes people do things they don’t want to do.

Here some of the types of coercion and an example of each.

  1. Persuasion: “I know you really want to…”
  2. Blame: “You can’t stop now! That’s cruel. I’m all excited.”
  3. Pressure: “I thought you said you loved me.”
  4. Blackmail: “If you don’t sleep with me I’ll tell everyone you’re a slut.”
  5. Manipulation: “I’m nothing without you. I don’t want to live without you.” *
  6. Guilt trips: “I spent my pay check buying you dinner and now you won’t put out.”
  7. Put downs: “If you break up with me, no one else would ever want you.”

* Even if you don’t think your partner is serious about suicide or hurting themselves, you need to get them help, no matter what. Go to a trusted adult or counselor.
