Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Approximately 1 in 3 adolescent girls in the United States is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner. Bullying, harassment, physical and emotional abuse are taking on new forms as technology continues to evolve the ways we share information. Teens may use cell phones, social networking sites and instant messaging in abusive ways. Fortunately many organizations, groups, and individuals are understanding the need to educate youth on the warning signs of dating violence and how to recognize what is and isn’t acceptable in all relationships.

HAVEN is taking action to prevent teen dating violence in Gallatin County by working closely with High school and Middle school Peer Educators. We have been training these students to give presentations to their peers about recognizing abusive behaviors, and how to develop healthy relationships through enhanced communication skills and self-esteem building. The Peer Educators participated in the National Teen Dating Violence and Prevention Week (February 1-7, 2010) by organizing a white ribbon campaign of respect. They started a petition asking their school mates to follow the Teen Dating Bill of Rights, which list the rights and responsibilities of teens in dating relationships. HAVEN’s goal is to reduce the prevalence of teen dating violence by educating youth on self worth and signs of abuse in a relationship. We are excited that many national organizations have committed to raising awareness throughout the whole month of February. Congratulations to all our peer educators for raising awareness and educating their classmates about respect, we’re so proud of you!
