Haven legal advocates: What they can and can't do

Haven legal advocates support survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, sexual assault, and stalking as they navigate the court system. Legal advocates explain general court procedures and paperwork and offer support at what can be a confusing and difficult time.

What Haven's legal advocates can do:

  • Provide support with Orders of Protection (the official Montana name for a restraining order)

  • Provide hearing prep (for Orders of Protection)

  • Go with you to your hearing

  • Provide limited support with Parenting Plans

  • Provide limited support with Dissolutions of Marriage (divorces)

  • Emotional support

  • Safety planning

  • A space to ask questions about the legal system

  • Make referrals to community partners

What Haven's legal advocates can’t do:

  • Provide legal advice

  • Represent you in court

  • Tell you what you should/shouldn't do

  • Interpret documents or the law

  • Provide support with immigration law, tenant law, criminal law, etc.
