Strangulation: Don't guess about the risks
Strangulation is one of the most dangerous and misunderstood forms of violence.
It can cause serious harm quickly. It may leave no visible injuries. And in the context of intimate partner violence, it can be a major warning sign of future danger.
That’s why Haven is inviting our community to know the risks.
What is strangulation?
Strangulation happens when pressure is put on someone’s neck. That pressure can affect breathing, blood flow, the brain, the voice, swallowing, and more.
Some people may use the word “choking,” especially in dating or sexual situations. But medically, choking usually means something is blocking the airway. Strangulation means pressure is being applied to the neck.
Whatever word someone uses, pressure on the neck can be dangerous.
